San Francisco, CA (PRWeb) November 19, 2006 -- On Thursday October 26, 2006, Academy of Art University students packed the Morgan Auditorium to experience first hand the making of the Lord of the Rings. Jim Rygiel, Effects Director for all three Lord of the Rings films, gave a riveting lecture for all Academy of Art University students. The lecture was exciting for both Animation School students and students who were fans of the films. Rygiel demonstrated the making of the Lord of the Rings and talked about his experience in the Animation and Visual Effects industry.

Upon graduating from art school in 1980, Jim Rygiel joined Pacific Electric Pictures, one of the earliest companies to employ computer animation for the advertising and film markets. Over the years, he has worked on several major motion picture films and participated in the industry's rapid growth. His invaluable knowledge of the Visual Effects industry was a highlight for students.

As part of the Academy's mission of imparting real world knowledge onto the future's designers, Jim Rygiel's lecture gave students a rare glimpse into the creation of one of Hollywood's biggest blockbusters. From the characters to the landscapes they inhabited, Rygiel broke down scenes and explained the technical and artistic challenges that each presented. He showed how the shots of human actors engaging with digital creatures were created and spoke in depth about the directorial challenges this type of filmmaking presents to the crew and the actors. His personal anecdotes and vivid descriptions brought the process alive so that students could experience the creation of one of the greatest visual effects films ever made.

Don Daglow whose company produced the Lord of the Rings video games, was also present. Together, Daglow and Rygiel offered insight into the connections between blockbuster films and the video games based upon those films. So many of today's blockbusters have a video game in the stores. It is important for students to learn about the synergy between the two. This is a rarely discussed topic in many mainstream schools. Since the Academy of Art University focuses their curriculum on training students with industry standard, practical knowledge, it was important that this aspect was included in the lecture.

Academy of Art University is an accredited member of ACICS, NASAD, Council for Interior Design Accreditation (Formerly FIDER), (BFA-IAD), and NAAB (M-ARCH).
