Austin, Texas (PRWEB) June 6, 2008 -- St. Edward's University, third oldest of eight U.S. Catholic colleges founded by France's Congregation of Holy Cross order, will repay that good deed in kind when it officially launches a spectrum of educational programs in Angers, France starting in Fall, 2008.

St. Edward's University becomes one of only two American universities to establish a branch campus in France. Students can learn more at the new Angers' campus website (www.stedwards.fr).

Initially, St. Edward's University will offer professional education courses to French and American students. St. Edward's has partnered with the Institut Bois-Robert and Universite Catholique de l'Quest, Ouest one of France's best-known Catholic colleges, in this expansion effort.

Western France presents an ideal expansion location for St. Edward's, in part because of the country's government-mandated funding of employee training and continuing education. Angers, located in the Loire River valley, boasts 33,000 college-aged residents, a growing IT industry, and TGV access to Paris. The Financial Times ranked Western France a 2008/2009 European Region of the Future.

Best Investment in Europe Award:

Each year, the World Investment Conference, hosted by the Europe Foundation, attracts some 900 high-level international leaders who gather to understand the needs of international investors, and to develop transatlantic and trans-Mediterranean cooperation.

Conference organizers today presented St. Edward's University with the Best Investment in Europe Award, one of only three awards that recognize foreign companies and non-profits for their investments in Europe.

"St. Edward's wants to stand apart among U.S. Catholic colleges, with a new model for the comprehensive teaching university where the majority of students will have an international experience," said university president George E. Martin. "This opportunity in France marks significant progress toward that vision. This partnership will bring more students to France, create more jobs, and ultimately address the need for a more knowledgeable workforce."

Global Understanding Initiative:

The expansion to France is part of a Global Understanding Initiative that provides students with opportunities to see themselves in the context of a global community. Through this program, St. Edward's, in partnership with other Catholic colleges such as UCO, is committed to helping students demonstrate knowledge of politics, economics, culture and communication through a global framework and to participate in international experiences.

St. Edward's University:

Founded by the Congregation of Holy Cross and located in Austin, Texas, St. Edward's University is home to more than 5,300 students. St. Edward's ranks high among U.S. Catholic colleges, listed among America's Best Colleges for 2008 by U.S. News & World Report and selected by The Princeton Review for inclusion in the guide Colleges with a Conscience.

Université Catholique de l'Ouest (UCO)

Established in 1875, the Université Catholique de l'Ouest tops all of France's Catholic colleges, enrolling more than 9,000 students on three campuses (Angers, Vannes/Arradon and Guingamp). UCO offers a full range of degree programs, and has a faculty of 400. The school is particularly known for its Centre International d'Etudes Françaises (CIDEF) that enables students to master French language and culture.

Institut Bois-Robert

Located ten minutes from downtown Angers, Institut Bois-Robert offers secondary education to an international student body of 250. Nestled in a 10-hectare campus, the school offers small classes and a close-knit family atmosphere. The campus includes a central manor house, with classrooms, sleeping quarters, a gymnasium and other sports facilities. The headmaster and his family live at the school.
